The World Cup 2014 will soon be upon us and offers punters one of the best and most exciting events to bet on, with several important live football matches taking place every day and involvement from 32 different nations from around the world.

As a betting punter you can bet on so many different markets during the world cup, the choice is staggering, one of those markets is the top goal scorer and we will have a look at who are the main favourites for this betting market.

Lionel Messi 8/1

There’s not much else to say about Messi, he is the most well-known and exciting player in world football.  However, he hasn’t quite ever shown that on the international stage at a major tournament, so will this time be the one for him to finally shine?  At 8/1 favourite his odds are quite short as he scores many of his goals coming from deep and might find some tough defences at the world cup.  The fact that the tournament is in South America has to give him a good chance though.

Neymar 14/1

Neymar is the poster boy of Brazilian football, combining great technical ability with an eye for the audacious.  He is the main forward in a young Brazil team and could prove a good selection for the Golden Boot.

Cristiano Ronaldo 14/1

Undoubtedly Ronaldo is a world class talent and in any other team we’d recommend a bet on him, but the Portugal team he plays in is fairly average and struggled to qualify for the world cup, so while he will probably get a few goals in the group games, it’s tough to see Portugal going really far in this tournament which will restrict Ronaldo’s chances of getting the Golden Boot prize.

Luis Suarez 15/1

Now here is a man that at 15/1 could definitely be a Golden boot winner.  The Uruguay team pretty much revolves around Luis Suarez, rather like Liverpool do.  He is such a talent that he has to be the focal point and can single-handedly tear teams apart.  Drawn in a fairly weak group (sorry England fans) he could get 4-5 goals in the bag just in the group stage, so 15/1 with Bet365 looks a nice price.  You can get a £200 free bet at the moment with Bet365 and can get more information here.

Sergio Aguero 18/1

Aguero is a world class talent and was in sparkling form earlier in the season for Manchester City.   He has a poor injury record though and this again proved a problem for him as he spent a few months out this season with injuries.  He still doesn’t look quite fully fit and will face a race against time to be sharp again for the World Cup, so others make more appeal.

Diego Costa 25/1

Diego Costa has done well for Atletico Madrid this season – they could win La Liga and are in the Champions League final.  He has also cemented himself as Spain’s best striker, but in a team that doesn’t really rely on one man to score goals he might end up with one or two.

Gonzalo Higuain 25/1

Higuain is probably going to be battling with Aguero for a starting place as Argentina have a huge array of attacking talents.  This might mean they don’t get lots of goals from any one striker, but if you were to bet on one man to put a few chances away then Higuain would probably be your man.  With injuries to Aguero he might be a good bet at 25/1.

Fred 28/1

Fred seems to have been around forever now but is actually still only 30 years old and has been in good goal scoring form for Brazil and at club level in the Brazilian league for Fluminense.  Brazil coach Scolari appears to like this guy and he has a good goal scoring record for Brazil, so he’s a decent outside bet at 28/1.

Germany striker Thomas Mueller has been awarded the Golden Boot for the previous World Cup 2010 finals
